Could Tom Cruse and John Travolta be remaking Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid?
Hold on, let me go heave up a little.
Ok, I’m back. According to a British tabloid, Cruise and Travolta will be starring in a remake of the iconic 1969 film. All I can say to this is a big, honking WTF? Who in this entire world would ever believe Chili Palmer on a horse, let alone in the role so wonderfully owned by Robert Redford?

Let’s pretend for a moment we actually believe the report.
Cruise supposedly got the go ahead from Paul Newman himself before the actor passed away last year. Already listed on IMDb as having fourteen projects in the works, eight of which are supposedly due in 2010, it makes one wonder just when Tom will have the opportunity to pull it together. He claims it has long been a pet project of his. Travolta, on the other hand, has only three projects due later this year. It’s understandable for him to have a light schedule, though. Travolta is still dealing with the death of his son Jett earlier this year.
I’ll take the high road and leave the Scientology jokes out, but something to me doesn’t smell right. Sources say Travolta “can’t wait to get to work,” but I can’t help thinking he maybe bullied into this thing by some of his cohorts. I’m all for getting back on the horse, but I still think it’s a bit soon to expect big things out of him. Let the man grieve.
As for Cruise himself, according to a senior executive he “will most likely happily eschew the enormous salary that he normally commands” in order to make the film supposedly a lower budget piece. Sounds more like a cover for a falling star who can no longer demand top prices. Cruise’s last film, Valkyrie wasn’t quite the blockbuster, Oscar-napping success United Artists was hoping for. (It is, however, heavily nominated for several Saturn Awards, a show honoring the best in Science Fiction, Fantasy, & Horror films, a decent award but a bit of a sting for a biopic.) Opening amid protests against the religion both Cruise and Travolta align themselves with, the film took serious flack from Germany for even casting Cruise in the role, sighting his religious beliefs to be on par with a cult.
Ever since TomCat jumped on the couch, Cruise’s stock has been falling. Travolta had a bit or a rise in popularity for his role in Hairspray but aside from that hasn’t made a good film since 1998’s A Civil Action. Hollywood is constantly cannibalizing older films for a grasp at something sure to make money. The whole thing reeks of has-beens. Pretending for a moment UA would go through with it, they’d be far better off casting young up-and-comers. I’d look at Star Trek’s Chris Pine and Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles if I were them.
But if United Artists really wants to make money off of proven franchises (which you can hardly call Butch Cassidy a franchise) then they should keep hold of their copyrights to the James Bond films and get that twenty-third Bond film out pronto.

Quantum of Solace Trailer #2
Guys this trailer makes me want to punch someone in the face it’s so good. I’ve read lots of people ragging on the title choice and to this day I don’t see why. I think its a fine title if they are going for a soul searching type movie. I’m guessing it will be a ultimate choice that Bond will have to make between something and something else so I think its a very appropriate title.
